Poverty not a barrier to good GCSEs - think tank
THE POOREST children in Hounslow did better in their GCSEs than most other low-income pupils in England.
According to think tank CentreForum nearly 50 per cent of the borough’s poorest pupils received five GCSEs at A* to C, compared to just 13 per cent in Portsmouth.
402 out of the 856 poorest children in the borough received the good grades, in subjects including English and maths, making it the eighth highest achieving borough in the country.
A council spokesperson said: "We are lucky to have such dedicated and talented professionals in the borough who work hard to help every child achieve their potential.
"But this success is not thanks to them alone. It is also down to the children themselves, and their families, who value their education and the opportunities it can provide.
"These results go to show that no matter what your background, Hounslow schools do a great job making sure every child in the borough has the best possible start in life."Tue 24/01/12
